A NEW BOOK
A chaplain's encounters with dying patients
Laurie Eynon grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, attended college in Valparaiso and Bloomington, Indiana, and raised a family in Columbus, Indiana. Then, ready for a new challenge, she and her husband picked up stakes and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She entered a Clinical Pastoral Education program and became a chaplain, working for nearly 20 years in area hospitals and hospices. She is now comfortably settled back in Indianapolis with her family, including five good-looking, smart, talented grandchildren. (not a biased opinion at all.) Besides her many years in chaplaincy, she boasts a varied and quirky work history, including a college English composition instructor, an ad copywriter for a radio station, a receptionist at a health club, an SAT grader, and a church youth worker. She participated in an exchange program that sent her to live in Denmark, working in churches and schools. She has been a participant in medical missions to Mexico and Ecuador. Her writing has appeared widely in many magazines and newspapers.
She loves listening to people's stories.
Stories from the Edge by Laurie Eynon is a profound, compassionate, and deeply human collection of true stories from the frontlines of hospital and hospice chaplaincy. With sharp insight, wit, and unwavering honesty, Eynon shares her experiences supporting patients and families during life’s most vulnerable moments—birth, suffering, loss, death, and the quiet miracles in between.
Drawing from her years of spiritual care in a large metropolitan hospital, Eynon invites readers into rooms rarely described in such vivid, tender detail. Whether it’s a young mother grieving a stillbirth, a war veteran reflecting on jelly and saltines, or a skeptical man refusing pain meds in faith, each story is filled with emotional truth and spiritual complexity.
What sets Stories from the Edge apart is Eynon’s ability to balance vulnerability with wisdom. She neither sugarcoats nor sensationalizes the realities of illness and dying. Instead, she writes with humility, humor, and an unshakable reverence for human dignity. Her presence in these stories—at once professional and personal—adds depth without overshadowing the people she serves.
A must-read for those in caregiving professions, faith communities, or anyone seeking to understand how we find meaning in the face of mortality. Stories from the Edge is a celebration of spiritual resilience, emotional courage, and the sacredness of simply being there.
